Our Story
The Heart Behind Y-Farms
A family business built through dogs, determination, heartbreak, healing, and the simple choice to keep showing up.
Welcome to Y-Farms.
If you’ve spent any time here, you’ve probably noticed this place is about much more than boarding, training, or raising Labrador Retrievers. It’s about relationships. It’s about trust. It’s about loving dogs like family and creating a place where people know their dogs are genuinely cared for.
I’m Jennifer Young-Hopkins, founder of Y-Farms Kennels, and I’ve been blessed to spend my entire adult life doing work I truly love.
Built One Season at a Time
Like many small business owners, I started with a dream, a lot of determination, and more hard work than I knew was possible. Every improvement we’ve made, every building we’ve added, every play yard, every training field, and every new service has come from years of reinvesting in the business and believing we could always make Y-Farms just a little better than it was yesterday.
“Y-Farms didn’t just build my career. It helped rebuild my life.”
The Dogs Were Always There
After becoming a young widow while raising my two-year-old son, I found myself trying to figure out what life looked like moving forward. During that season, someone gave me a Labrador Retriever puppy. At the time, I couldn’t have imagined that simple gift would become the foundation of a business that has now served families across Louisiana for nearly three decades.
Life continued to bring incredible blessings, but it also brought unimaginable heartbreak. My family endured my son’s devastating rodeo accident and, only months later, the loss of my daughter, Madison.
Grief has a way of changing everything.
There were days when I couldn’t bring myself to train dogs the way I always had. I’d load them into my truck, drive to the training grounds, and sit there unable to get out. My husband, Brad, would gently encourage me to keep trying. Sometimes just being with the dogs was enough for that day.
Instead of giving up, I adapted.
I poured my energy into boarding, one-on-one obedience training, and creating an even better experience for every family who trusted us with their dogs.
“While I was helping care for their best friends, the dogs were quietly helping take care of me.”
Purpose
They gave me purpose when I felt lost.
Routine
They gave me routine when life felt chaotic.
Hope
They gave me a reason to get up on days when I wasn’t sure I could.
More Than a Kennel
Looking back, I realize Y-Farms has never really been just about dogs. It’s about hope. It’s about resilience. It’s about showing up, even when life is hard.
Today, when people visit Y-Farms, they see beautiful facilities, happy dogs, and a business that has grown over many years. What they don’t always see are the countless early mornings, late nights, sacrifices, lessons learned, and faith it took to build it.
Every challenge has shaped who I am as a business owner, as a wife, as a mother, and as a person.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: life doesn’t always go according to plan. But with faith, determination, the support of people who love you, and sometimes the unconditional love of a dog, healing is possible.
Whether you’re trusting us with your puppy, boarding your lifelong companion, listening to a podcast, or simply finding your way here, I hope you leave believing that even life’s hardest chapters can lead to something meaningful.
Thank you for allowing Y-Farms to be part of your story. It’s truly an honor to share a small part of ours.
With gratitude,
Jennifer Young-Hopkins
